In July 2023, Broadmead Road Bridge in Woodford was closed to vehicular traffic after inspections revealed significant structural defects, including cracks, falling concrete, and corrosion throughout the structure. These findings necessitated an immediate closure to ensure public safety.

Following the closure, Redbridge Council commissioned detailed surveys to assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary steps for reopening the bridge. Due to the bridge's location over the Central Line, these surveys required collaboration with Transport for London (TfL) and were conducted during limited overnight hours when train services were not operational.

In November 2024, Council Leader Cllr Kam Rai provided an update, stating that assessments concluded the bridge is "not structurally sound to reopen to vehicles." He emphasized the extensive work required to restore the bridge, estimating costs of at least £25 million. Given the council's financial constraints, exacerbated by significant funding reductions since 2010, securing external funding is essential. Cllr Rai has reached out to both regional and national government bodies to seek support for this critical infrastructure project.

To keep the community informed and involved, an online public meeting was held on November 18, 2024. During this session, residents received updates on the bridge's condition, the work completed thus far, and the anticipated next steps. The council also addressed concerns about the bridge's maintenance history, noting that while issues were identified in 2014, subsequent inspections and maintenance were conducted, and no immediate safety concerns were evident until the 2023 inspection.

Currently, the bridge remains open to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, but it is closed to cars and heavier vehicles. The council plans to finalize an options report by June 2025, which will outline potential solutions for the bridge's repair or reconstruction. The timeline for reopening will depend on the chosen course of action and the availability of funding. Cllr Rai has committed to continued advocacy for the necessary support and to keeping residents informed throughout the process.

The closure of Broadmead Road Bridge has significantly impacted local traffic and daily commutes. The council is actively monitoring traffic patterns, coordinating with TfL to adjust traffic signals, and installing additional signage to assist road users. Residents are encouraged to participate in future consultations and stay updated through official council communications.

In summary, while the closure of Broadmead Road Bridge presents substantial challenges, Redbridge Council is diligently working to address the structural issues, secure necessary funding, and minimize disruption to the community. Ongoing assessments and public engagement remain central to developing a viable solution for this essential infrastructure. Although for now, there is no clear indication of when works will begin and when the road will re-open!
